SWRC events encompass all aspects of the modern car scene in the UK & Ireland, appealing to followers of both the motorsport and modified car scenes. Encorporating 1/4 Mile Drag Racing, Drifting, Time Attack, Rally Sprint and Track Day, SWRC events reflect the diversity of modern car culture.
The Sideways Racing Championship enjoyed increasing success during the first three seasons of its existence before the explosion in popularity in 2006. Originally pitched as a low cost rallycross-type Series based at Nutts Corner Motor Sports Centre, it had immediate widespread appeal with racing classes designed to accommodate everything from standard 1200cc cars to outright Super Cars.
With the suspension of racing at Nutts Corner during the 2004 Winter Series it was fortunate that Aghadowey Racing Circuit was able to step in and allow the season to come to an enjoyable end.
A bold decision was taken to open the day's event to incorporate a track day prior to the main race program and a drag strip at the end, both of which have proved very popular and thrilling to watch. These elements have developed further to the full program that we now see at all SWRC events: the Ulster Drift Championship, Racing Series, Drag Strip racing and track Test Sessions.
The addition of Bishops Court airfield circuit in April of 2006 has been a major factor in the current surge in popularity and has added long term security to the future of the events. With management and staff truly dedicated to their sport and to maintaining the spirit of the series, they bring a fresh approach to motor sport that hasn't been seen for many years. It seems that SIDEWAYS really IS the way forward! |
